A vendor hands a customer a bag of fruit. It's a small moment, but one full of warmth, familiarity, and care.

Markets are more than places to shop. They're where community happens, through repeated visits and familiar faces, where strangers slowly become neighbors. The fruit itself carries its own story: soil, labor, and seasons, brought from field to city by the people who feed us. The glow in the title isn't just light. It's the feeling that hangs in the air when people gather, exchange, and briefly share in each other's day.

“We Don’t Need Them” reflects on migrant workers and the often invisible labor that brings food to our tables. It looks at where our food really comes from and the people whose bodies, time, and lives sustain everyday comfort. Under the beaming sun, the work points to the physical toll and endurance required in this labour.

Despite the racism and hatred surrounding migration, this painting insists on recognition and dignity. Titled “We Don’t Need Them,” the work confronts the irony and violence of that statement by emphasizing the simple truth that we DO need migrant workers.
