Artwork by Kalli Vath

Artist Statement: I am an Ottawa-based multidisciplinary artist examining the notion of bodily memory and the fragility of nostalgia. Lately I’ve been interested in contextualizing this role of memory production in the collective psyche, particularly when it comes to gendered histories and sensory perception, drawing from feminist psychoanalysis and re-imagined Symbolist motifs for inspiration. In my pictures, the environment is alive, landscapes are antagonistic, and scent takes on form to speak. Natural forms reinforce presence within absence, as nature personified; my work is both an ode to the unwilling witness and the power of memory.
Kalli Vath is a multidisciplinary artist with a BFA from the University of Ottawa, interested in the notion of bodily memory. Seeking to represent the unrepresentable, she looks at how memory renders itself inaccessible to us, portraying that unreliability through visual interventions. These explorations are conducted through a synthesis of drawing, painting, and photography that seek to question the sanctity of memory and image.
