Texts From Nonna to Gioia
Evelyn Costa
Ciao gioia how are you ?you fond lots of snow here ,ruin our plan, <3 you <3
She waits eagerly in the kitchen,
lovingly tending to all the dishes she prepared.
A light lunch, she said.
Pasta number one, and pasta number two
in case we don’t like the first one.
Veal cotoletta, red peppers, penne,
everyone’s favourites.
She continues to put out the orange juice
we used to drink with every meal.
Just in case.
I am so happy ,finally we spend same time together
Not a dust bunny in sight,
a bathroom of fresh candles,
the wicks never lit.
She approaches the door,
her face distorted at the bottom of the glass.
A warm embrace,
a kiss on each cheek
a slight red stain.
She checks the mirror briefly,
adjusting her meticulous outfit.
Evelyn, you no how much we love you ? lots lots
She gleams as we show her our new outfits,
eyes sparkling if it includes something she chose.
She’ll ask about us about school,
about seconds.
Assumed tragedy upon refusal.
She’ll say we need to eat more,
but then secretly ask one of us
why the other has gained so much weight.
Hi Evelyn you are filling better ? Maybe you are on the yay bak to Ottawa . love you!!
She checks in often,
especially if we’ve been sick.
She’ll give her opinion,
whether we ask for it or not.
Old arguments find their way back,
but she refuses to talk past tribulations.
Though her Mediterranean tan has since faded,
and her childhood farm has been paved,
her passport remains different from mine,
and she’ll never change.
Remember nonna love you very much ,and you call me for anything . <3 you
Evelyn Costa graduated in June 2025 with an Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences and a Microprogram in Creative Writing. Evelyn plans to go into medicine but has always had a deep love for the arts, specifically literature. Poetry has been her least favourite genre since forever, but after taking a class in it (Intro to Writing Poetry), she's found a new appreciation for it.
